Despite a busy couple weeks, I managed to squeeze in a few movies for Movies Teach Us. I couldn’t keep letting you think I was a total slacker.
First, I watched Inglorious Basterds. I learned only 3 1 thing:
Nazis are bad.Knew that.Quentin Tarantino makes really bloody movies.Knew that, too.- When you’re pretending to be German, if you need to use your fingers to show the number 3, use your thumb and your first two fingers (just like American Sign Language). If you don’t, you’ll get shot in the balls.
But since I don’t have balls, I didn’t learn anything pertinent from this movie.
Next up…Big.
Before I tell you what I learned, I have a question: Am I the only one who thought it was weird that a 12-year-old made out with a woman the same age as his mother?
- When you make a wish, be very specific. Tom Hanks could have ended up being “big” like 50 feet tall or 500 pounds.
- Pulling your pants down as an adult to show your mom your birthmark…not a good idea.
- In 1988 there was not a ridiculously long line at the giant keyboard in FAO Schwarz.
And finally, I watched The Dilemma.
Obviously, movies teach us a lot. Hence, the more movies I watch, the smarter I become. I’m pretty sure I’m approaching genius status because I learned only one thing from this movie as well.
- Just because Vince Vaughn and Kevin James are in a movie doesn’t mean it’s going to be funny.

Of course, putting Kevin James in any movie reduces the funny by a factor of 10. Seriously. Scientists proved it.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:21 am
I don’t know. I thought he was kinda funny in Hitch.
September 20th, 2011 at 8:09 am
Seriously…I thought the kissing scene in Big was incredibly uncomfortable. UGH.
And I was way disappointed in Inglorious Basterds.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:21 am
I’m glad I’m not the only one freaked out by the relationship in Big.
September 20th, 2011 at 8:19 am
Yeah, Kevin James sucks….he destroys all that is funny.
September 20th, 2011 at 9:20 am
That’s all you got from Inglourious Basterds? Oh Thoughtsie, you are silly. If you need help with great movies like that I am here for you.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:17 am
Educlaytion, gotta girl here wants you to explain Inglorious Basterds. Oblige her!
September 21st, 2011 at 8:22 am
I liked the movie. I just didn’t learn much from it. What would you add?
September 20th, 2011 at 10:22 am
I would LOVE to play on a giant keyboard. I wonder if Toys R Us sells them nowadays? 🙂
September 20th, 2011 at 10:23 am
Love Inglourious Basterds and all the bloody crazy Quentin antics. Kinda like the Final Destination movies that you hate to love to watch because it’s soo gross! And cool! No Gross! LOL.
I watched BIG the other day. I sooo LOVE this movie, but it was the first time I was a little disturbed (sign of the times?). What I noticed was why didn’t someone think he was a pedophile as an adult hanging out in the city with a 12yr old boy. LOL.
You are too funny. 🙂
September 20th, 2011 at 11:08 am
Ahh, the 80s . . . where nobody thought twice about a grown man hanging out with a young boy. Now they would call the cops on his ass and raid his home. Hopefully.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:24 am
I love the part where he gets excited because his paycheck is $187. Ah, to live in the 80s.
I can’t believe the boy travels from the city to his home…at night…by himself.

Thanks for the reminder about pretending to be German. I mean, if I ever try to infiltrate a Nazi organization, I am sure I will need that info. Also? If you get shot in the leg, make up a better story than ski accident when there was a massacre, and remember not to leave your hankerchief and shoe at the scene.
And Dilemma was playing on a recent flight and the hubs decided to watch it. I had brought a portable video player and instead watched Juno (he had seen it). I definitely won in that situation. He said that it was 2 hours of his life that he would never get back and that made him very sad. I think the calculation goes: Vince Vaughn + Owen Wilson or Jon Favreau = comedy gold. Everything else cannot be saved.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:25 am
That’s a good actor formula for me to remember.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:22 am
I loved the Tarentino film and thought it was hilarious. Sick and twisted like all of his stuff, but funny!
BIG, I didn’t really like.
The other one I never saw, but then Vince creeps me out.
September 20th, 2011 at 11:39 am
Well I learned this weekend by watching “Coal Miner’s Daughter” is a woman can have six kids before 27. And be 14 years older than her first born. And get in fist fights with her husband. It was interesting.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:26 am
Is that one about Loretta Lynn? Is it an older movie? I looked for it on Netflix.
September 20th, 2011 at 12:36 pm
Now I have to see “Big”. You’ve peaked my interest.
Have you seen “Pirates of the Caribbean-On Stranger Tides” yet?
I learned that I could never be pirate. I couldn’t swing a sword to save my life. And Johnny Depp is definitely the soul of these movies. Kiera Knightly and Orlando Bloom weren’t missed.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:29 am
You’ve never seen Big? GASP! Are you sure you’re an adult and not someone still in high school?
I haven’t seen the new Pirates movie yet, but I saved it my Netflix queue. Thanks!
September 20th, 2011 at 2:12 pm
Trust me, I thought that was strange too.
September 20th, 2011 at 3:30 pm
I don’t think Kevin James is even semi-funny. I would have probably came to that same conclusion once I saw his face 😉

Awww…shucks. Thanks!

For many years, starting a movie was the only way I could fall asleep. Much to Ba.D.’s chagrin, it’s still very much the case that when a movie starts playing (and I’m not in the theater!), I feel the pull of sleep.
I’d just like to state for the record that I find your Movies Teach Us posts are both much more informational and entertaining than most movies I’ve watched. 😀

Such a flatterer!
September 20th, 2011 at 5:53 pm
I fantasized about various ways to murder Vince Vaughn and Kevin James while I watched The Dilemma. It was fucking annoying and awful.
September 21st, 2011 at 8:33 am
I watched it with my new roommates, and I just kept apologizing: “I’m so sorry. I thought it would be funny.” Hopefully, they don’t hate me now.
September 20th, 2011 at 9:59 pm
The Dilemma… just from the trailer I knew it wasn’t worth wasting brain cells on.
September 20th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
Dear me. I forgot how much you make me laugh. I’m sorry I’ve been away so long! I’ve missed you!
September 21st, 2011 at 8:34 am
I was so happy to see you’re posting again! I missed you!
September 21st, 2011 at 5:17 am
I’ve only seen Big from your list and yes it was all a bit creepy but Tom just about pulls it off!
September 21st, 2011 at 6:46 am
The thing in “Big” has ALWAYS freaked me out! I’m like, does no one else notice SHE’S A PEDOPHILE???
September 21st, 2011 at 7:21 am
Awe man I really had high hopes for The Dilemma. That sucks. This makes me sad. It really should be funny.
September 21st, 2011 at 9:07 am
Haha. I watched Big when I was younger and asked my mom the same question. She took away the TV. Weird?
September 21st, 2011 at 1:13 pm
Inglorious Basterds is one of my very favorite movies. 🙂 Big always creeped me out, too–it felt molestery to me! 😦 Haven’t see The Dilemma yet, so I’ll take your advice and skip it. I really don’t care too much for Vince Vaughn.
September 21st, 2011 at 11:05 pm
You know which movie taught me about the necessity for being specific when making wishes? Bedazzled.
Great post Thoughtsy, I do enjoy learning more about life through your movie lessons.
🙂

baaaaaaahahahaha
yea i watched that and it’s about all i learned too.

The relationship in Big didn’t seem strange until I got older. Also, that movie is one of those that I loved when I was younger and identified with Tom Hanks’ character. Then, it was on TV a couple years ago and I bawled at the ending because I identified with Elizabeth Perkins and the larger theme of how being an adult is hard hit me. That was a weird feeling.
